Local IT Company Helps Slow the Brain Drain from the Highlands to the Central Belt
sfG Software, a local IT Support and Software Development company, has just recruited its latest employee, and is doing its bit to keep home-grown talent in the Highlands.
Fraser MacBeath had been searching for a job in software development since graduating from Glasgow Caledonian University this year. Having been born and schooled in Inverness, Fraser went to university in the Central Belt but was keen to return to his homeland for full-time employment. He had given himself a year in which to find something in the Highlands before looking further south, and when he was offered the job as software programmer at sfG Software, based near Inverness, he jumped at the chance.
“We were delighted to be able to welcome Fraser to our team and stop him being forced to look for employment elsewhere”, said Managing Director, David Garvie. “So many of our applicants came from the Central Belt and we were really looking for someone local.”
sfG Software started trading in February 2010 and has already built an impressive client list locally, including businesses such as Jacobite Cruises and Synergie Scotland. The initials ‘sfG’ stand for “small, friendly Giant”, and this sums up the business’s values. They provide a ‘giant’ service to their customers while delivering all the benefits you would expect from a ‘small and friendly’ company. The feedback they have received from their customers confirms that they are delivering on these values. As Rod Michie, Director of Jacobite Cruises, said: “sfG Software were the only company in the Highlands that could provide us with 7 day a week cover, which is essential for our business. They have completely updated our systems and have constantly impressed us with how responsive, professional and helpful they are.”
sfG Software’s main focus at the moment is delivering IT Support to businesses in the Highlands. They have built a team of highly experienced programmers and engineers, all recruited from the Highlands, so do not rely on any one individual who can leave a business exposed when on holiday or off sick. Between them, sfG’s IT support engineers have decades of experience of managing IT networks.
Unlike many IT support companies, they provide the giant ‘extras’ like out of hours support and service level agreements tailored precisely to the customer’s needs. They have also pioneered the concept of giving money back to their customers if it turns out they don’t need as much support as first thought.
If sfG Software continues to grow the way it has, the future is bright for IT talent who would otherwise have been forced to relocate to the Central Belt.
